Position Summary
The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of company vehicles and landscape equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This role supports daily field operations by minimizing downtime, maintaining compliance with safety standards, and extending the life cycle of fleet assets.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance
- Perform preventive maintenance on fleet assets including:
- Light- and medium-duty trucks (F-150/F-250, flatbeds, dump trucks, crew cabs)

- Trailers (utility, enclosed, dump, gooseneck)

- Commercial mowing equipment (zero-turn mowers, stand-on mowers)

- Small engine equipment (blowers, trimmers, edgers, hedge trimmers)

- Compact construction equipment (mini skid steers, mini excavators, loaders)
- Conduct routine inspections and identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.
- Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, steering, cooling systems, and electrical systems.
- Perform welding, fabrication, and minor body repairs as needed.
- Maintain DOT compliance where applicable.
Preventive Maintenance & Documentation
- Complete scheduled PM services (oil changes, filters, belts, hoses, fluids, lubrication).
- Accurately document all repairs and maintenance using work orders or fleet management software.
- Maintain service records for compliance, warranty, and cost tracking.
- Assist in creating maintenance schedules and equipment lifecycle plans.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow company safety policies, OSHA standards, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Ensure all vehicles and equipment meet operational and safety standards before release.
- Maintain a clean and organized shop environment.
- Properly handle hazardous materials (fuel, oil, batteries, solvents).
Operational Support
- Communicate with Fleet Manager and operations teams regarding equipment status and repair timelines.
- Respond to breakdowns in the field when necessary.
- Support emergency repairs to keep crews operational.
- Assist with seasonal equipment changeovers (spring startup, winterization).
Required Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (Technical school preferred).
- Minimum 1–3 years experience as a mechanic (fleet, diesel, or small engine preferred).
- Strong knowledge of:
- Gas and diesel engines

- Trailer and brake systems
- Ability to read service manuals and diagnostic software.
- Proficient with hand tools and shop equipment.
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred or ability to obtain).
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work in outdoor/industrial environments.
- Experience servicing brands such as Ditch Witch, Takeuchi, Scagg, Vermeer, Toro, Echo, Stihl, John Deere, Honda or similar.
Work Environment
- Indoor shop and travel to outdoor job sites required.
- Exposure to noise, grease, fuel, and weather conditions.
- May require extended hours during peak landscape seasons.
- On-call or emergency repair availability may be required.
Preferred Certifications (not required but beneficial)
- ASE Certifications (A1–A8 or T series)
- DOT Inspector Certification
- Small Engine Repair Certification
- Welding Certification
- EPA 609 (A/C systems)
Compensation: $28.00 - $32.00 per hour
